In late 2007 we discovered that quality OLAP (On Line Analytical Processing) tools don’t need to cost the earth! Searching the internet we came across a new and highly performing tool called PALO, which is released under an open-source agreement, which means that it’s FREE!
What is PALO? Well here’s what they say on their web site
“Jedox Palo-Server is a multi-dimensional database server capable of centrally administering an almost infinite number of spreadsheet cells. The system operates in real-time, supports consolidation hierarchies as well as numerous BI functions. Palo-Server is open-source, and is available free-of-charge”
This means that today’s model of expensive BI software with ever increasing support charges is finally being realistically challenged. The old paradigm of the expensive software tool with the armies of consultants required to implement it no longer the only viable option being. Best of breed point solutions to BI problems are now within the reach of even the smallest of organisations.
This new model is a democratic one. Commodity Tools freely available at low cost with the revenues coming from ancillary services like on-line training, support and maintenance, yet even these are priced at a level that permits the spread of the technology. Here at T.P.F. we firmly believe that OLAP tools should be a commodity and not a luxury. We all need business intelligence!
This exciting development will allow T.P.F. to develop low cost (and sometimes free) tools that can be used easily and cost effectively around the world in the areas of merchandise planning and financial budgeting.
Our first step in this direction will be to finalise our partnership with Jedox, after which we plan to release a basic Open Source W.S.S.I. planning tool for retail merchandisers in Q1 2008. Our ultimate aim is to create a global community of merchandise planners with access to low cost or free software that is the equal of any branded offering.
OLAP is Dead! Long Live the new OLAP!
